Forward Faster: Accelerating climate action in the labeling industry

We have set ourselves an ambitious goal to be the world's first label materials company beyond fossils, designing better solutions for the packaging industry. For us, going beyond fossils means increasing the share of renewable and recycled raw materials in our products and reducing dependence on virgin fossil resources. We believe that labels can make a difference in reducing the environmental impact of packaging.

Minimizing the use of fossil fuels is the most important way to mitigate climate change. UPM's 2030 responsibility target to decrease its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% compared to 2015 level has been approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This confirms that the UPM target is aligned with the Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

As part of UPM, we are committed to the UN Global Compact’s Forward Faster Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Today, only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track to meet their target levels by 2030. This reality compels a call for further action also in our industry.

UPM Raflatac ambition:
The world's first label materials company beyond fossils

We act through forests and land

All papers we source from the year 2024 onwards, whether used as face paper or a release liner in our labeling materials, are certified under a credible third-party forest certification scheme.

As the demand for renewable solutions grows, so does our responsibility to ensure the sustainable origin of biobased raw materials. Beyond certified papers, we also aim at having 100% of the other biobased materials traceable by 2030. These include tackifiers, alternative fibers, natural latex, and biobased films. The way we use virgin resources plays a critical role in climate change mitigation, as growing trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide and store it in the soil.

We act through emission reductions

Reducing the use of fossil fuels as much as possible is the most important climate action of today.

UPM Raflatac has a goal to reduce GHG emissions from fuels and the purchased electricity used at our production sites by 65% relative to production volume by 2030 from 2015 level. We also aim to reduce the emissions related to raw materials and transportation by 30% relative to production volume by 2030 compared to 2018.
